To apply for the dual-title PhD program in Visual Studies, students must be enrolled in Penn State’s graduate programs in the departments of Art History, Comparative Literature, English, Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures, or Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Applications are accompanied by a letter of approval from the Director of Graduate Studies in the student’s home department. We accept applications at any point in the year from students at any stage prior to PhD candidacy.

Other interested students in Penn State PhD programs may contact their Director of Graduate Studies for information about pursuing a Graduate Minor in Visual Studies. Classes listed for the Visual Studies degree are open to all Penn State graduate students. Students need not be pursuing either the dual-tile or the minor to enroll.

For questions about the program and the enrollment process, please contact the Visual Studies dual-title program Director, Christopher Reed, at cgr11@psu.edu or the program’s Director of Graduate Studies, Daniel Purdy, at dlp14@psu.edu.
