Art history attends to the social context in which works of art and architecture are created and received as well as to their material specificity, complementing the scholarly aims of Visual Studies. The faculty of the Department of Art History includes specialists in African, Asian, European, Latin American, and U.S. visual and material culture, with opportunities for PhD candidates to pursue advanced study on topics from prehistory to the present day.
